Trying to understand if a problem is XP related

I'm exploring possibilities for what might be causing two very weird
things that started last week:
1) Using Opera (9.5x) with Yahoo mail, trying to attach a file to an

Lately my taskbar hasn't been showing up and when that happens, the auto
hide feature is disabled.
I have to minimize screen until I can see the taskbar and the all works.
How can I make it so that the taskbar shows up each time as it did all the
previously times.

My aunt donated me a computer for college. But she doesn't remember the
login. I was wondering since I cant get pass the login, is there a way to get
pass it, if not then could i just purchase vista and would I still be able to
