XP home shutdown problem...

I have a machine with XP Home that does not shutdown or restart. It
hangs on the screen the says Windows is shutting down. Is there an way
to check what processes and/or threads are closed during shutdown? How
can I check what the OS is hanging on during shutdown?

Desktop icons shown as "e" when they should have a graphic

On this new computer the desktop icons from web pages are shown only as the
blue "e" symbol. My other computers with XP show them as symbols from the
web
pages. I need the same arrangement on this computer, where the desktop icon
for a web page is a small graphic from the web page.
