start menu hangs up

my start menu is constantly hanging up, when i click on a shortcut like
programs it will open but it just stays blank and cant do anything with the
puter but eventually i get control back
win xp sp2
1.6mghz

I've tried researching this all over the web but found no solution.
My system: XP Professional with service pack 1
After it idle, the error would pop up.

USB ext hard drive can't shut down.

I've been having off and on problems lately so I've been doing some cleanup
& backup in case this thing crashes.
My latest is that when I click on the icon to "safely remove the hardware"
quite often get a msg that something else is running and it can't shut own
right now. So I have to shut down my laptop ...

I like an organized start menu. On a regular basis I do some cleanup to put
program groups in sub folders in my All Users/Start/All Programs folders.
For example, anything that is internet or communications related goes in my

I like to have my program listing customized (not in alphabetical order) and
in IE I customize my favorites listing (again not in alphabetical order).

hdd in cradle unable to access

My hdd crashed and I am able to see my profiles but can't access the folders
with the drive in a usb cradle. I have passwords on 3 profiles on the old
drive all are mine but I can't get to the files to transfer them to the new

I have just updated my WinXP Pro from SP2 to SP3 and since than some of my
Programs intended to start at System Startup fail to start. Even some
services fail.
I have many programs configured to start at system startup. Is there a
limitation?
How can I find out reasons for failure.

Windows Time Syncronization

I had a clean install of WindowsXP SP2.
It's on a workgroup and have network settings from a Win2000 DHCP, uses 2 MS
DNS's, and a Gateway from Novell. Internet Time is disabled. If a set up a
