Site Searches not returning results

Sharpoint Portal Sever 2003 is installed on a single server sceario
NO results are being returned on site searches but the same search from the
portal
works ok.
Can anyone shed any light on this as it has worked previously?

Portal content - Cannot crawl individual items in portal (greyed out check-box)

In the index settings for portal content, the check box used to crawl
individual items is greyed out. We need to check it to be able to search for
individual files, not the list name where the items reside. How can we make
this check box alive again? It works on one or our servers, so it must be
possible.

Searching user created properties

I added a property to a user profile and filled it with a value. I made sure
the value isn't a noise word. Searching for that value doesn't find the user
however???
Should I add the new property to some "search these fields list"? Any
