Linking to a document in the library from inside a document in lib

I am having a problem creating links from inside of a document to another
document in the library.
I have a Powerpoint file that I want to insert links into, the links will
open other documents that are currently in the same document library as the

I have 1 user who is having problems opening docs on our Portal (2003).
When he opens an Excel or Word (2003) doc The program window comes up but
the doc doesn't. I have sometimes found 2 instances of Word or Excel open in
taskmanager. Closing one usually fix's it. I'm not sure if this is Sharepoint
