Recompiling workflow kills existing workflows!

Hi,
I have a state machine workflow with multiple states. If I recompile my
workflow (say for example I need to fix a minor bug or even spelling
mistake) all existing workflows stop running.
The workflow status remains at "In Progress" and if you go to the list items

Duplicating workflow steps in SharePoint Designer

Hi,
For want of a better phrase, is there a way to copy/paste chunks of SPD
workflow.. either within the designer or some other relatively easy way.
As there is no "Goto" feature, I have to branch out into duplicate steps and
don't want to have to manually input them all.
