Can't connect to linked server

I have a default SQL 2005 instance (DTSERVER2) and a named SQL 2005 instance
(DTSERVER2\HOMAX01). I can connect to either instance remotely via
Management Studio using Windows Authentication.
I have created a linked server on DTSERVER2 with the following properties:

We've just run into a nearly same problem.
In our case, there is a server, and a clinet in the same LAN.
When there is no VPN connection in the clinet machine, all seems good, connections are fine.
When the client machine connect to a VPN, the sql express connections seems fails. At least we noticed the p ...

I am getting the error "login failed for user''" when trying to connect to my
SQL 2005 from a remote server using windows authentication. Using SQL
authentication works, but is not a suitable work-around.
The database is in mixed mode.
The user has DBO access to the database.
