Excel managed-code add-in - not recommended by MS?

In Eric Carter's blog he makes this statement: ".. Excel does not support or
recommend writing an XLL that uses managed code."
Does this mean that I can but probably should not use managed code to write
a function that can be called from Excel?

Excel 2003 Problem with change from SP2 to SP3

I have a home grown XLL which includes functions taking ranges (as xlopers)
and returning a (large) range (as xloper).
We use it as a single array formula across the target result range.
It works fine in Excel 2003 SP2 - returning ca. 4500 rows.

I also want to automate writing of data to Excel cells, inside the worksheet
functions. I used xlSet.
xlSet does not work if called within a worksheet function.

Office 2003 displays "???" chars when XLL UDF managed C# returns

I have a managed XLL addin for Excel that defines a UDF function to be used
in Excel that returns a string.
If the string it returns is "èÃÃ?Ã?Ã?ê" the result will not be properly
displayed by Excel, instead there will be ??? chars displayed instead.
OS: Windows XP SP2 (English)
