#VALUE! in cells when I open spreadsheet

I have a spreadsheet with links to other excel files. (All excel 2003). When
I open the spreadsheet, the cells all show #VALUE! until I open the other
spreadsheets that the links refer to. Is there any to fix this so that the
updates work without opening the other spreadsheets.

We are running Excel 2000 under Windows XP. There are several spreadsheets
residing in a folder on a server to which 4 people have their O drive mapped.

letters, however, will stay the same (I: and J:), but will be changing from
something like:

to:
