How does MS Word arrange the inter word space?

I am now working on finding some statistic feature of inter word
space in MS word document. So I need to know the algrithm or policy MS
word employing to determin the space length between two words.Yet, I
find there is not any article or manual descripting that.
I hope some one to give me some hint or resolution ...

Trying to select all and update all fields. It doesn't work. I can
update by right-clicking on the TOC and update field, but why can't I
do it by selecting all? I want the cross-references to update as

Why can't I delete a format

There is a format shown in the "styles and formatting" side bar when I
specify "available formatting" thas is named "Normal + Centered, Space
Before: 2 pt, After: 2 pt"
It says it is in use in 1 place but will not go anywhere when I select
"Select all 1 instance(s)".
If I try to delete it it asks if I am sur ...
