Reliability of Open Office Writer conversions to doc

I like MS Word more than Open Office Writer, but I've been testing Writer and
I'd like to know how well it converted my document to doc format. I put the
letterhead in a frame because I've found no method of putting it in the
header of only the first page if I want OOWriter to convert it to doc format.

Converting 1995 vintage MS Word for Mac files

DOTX files - can't open w/ 2003 Office Pro

Our company is getting a fair amount of documents in DOTX that we can not
open.
We are using XP Pro w/ Office 2003 Pro and all the latest updates.
If DOTX is a Microsoft file and our company is 100% Microsoft, why can't we
open the files?

Upper case after period.

I just switched from Office 2003 to Office 2007 and I can't seem to find a
way to stop letters from becoming upper case after a period.
"fx. blablabla" comes out "fx. Blablabla".
I was able to change this in Office 2003 so a letter would stay lower case
unless I pressed the SHIFT button, but I can't find i ...

I created Word documents from Office Word 2007 and saved as "Word 97/2003".
When open from Office Word 2003, it shows garbage. I have already downloaded
and installed the "File converter", it still doesn't help. Any solution for
